How do we obtain Malaysian Birth Certificates
The Malaysian Birth Certificate is issued by the Malaysian National Registry Department (contact details below). The hospital in which the birth took place would guide you through the birth registration process. Please ensure that the birth certificate contain the passport number of parents.

How do I travel back to the Maldives after Birth?
If the baby is traveling to Maldives, the parents can obtain a travel letter from the High Commission by completing and submitting the Application for Travel Letter for Maldivians Born in Malaysia. (The travel letter allows the baby to travel to Maldives with parent(s) and is only valid for one travel) – Please view Passports menu for details

What if I’m residing/studying in Malaysia?
If you will be staying in Malaysia for a longer duration or if you need to travel to another country, the baby should obtain a passport. A passport can be obtained only with a valid Maldives National I.D. Card. A Birth Certificate and a permanent address in the Maldives are required for to obtain a National I.D. The High Commission can facilitate obtaining these documents from the respective authorities in the Maldives. We will provide you with the relevant forms and you can submit it to us so that we can liaise with the government authorities to obtain the documents for you.
Application to be submitted for each document:
STEP 1: Maldives Birth Certificate: Complete and submit the application form ‘Information for Birth Certificate’ of the Male’ Municipality.
STEP 2: Register at the Office in the island of residence IF registering in Male’ or “Male’ Dhafthar” fill in the required section of the ‘Info. for Birth Certificate’ form above.
IF registration is in an island other than Male’ obtain birth certificate from Male’ Municipality and register at the Island.
(IMPORTANT: Parents may also opt to make a declaration to the National Registration Department stating that registration will be completed at a later date)
STEP 3: Temporary National I.D. Card Complete and submit the application form for National I.D. of the Department of National Registration.
STEP 4: Passport Complete and submit the application form for Passport of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
IMPORTANT Please make sure that all sections are complete in the forms and the necessary documents are submitted.
The family would need to appoint someone in the Maldives who will make the necessary payments and produce documentation such as the house register to the relevant office if required.
