Q1.
How long should my passport be valid to travel to Malaysia?
Malaysian Immigration authorities would normally require your passport
to be valid for more than six months or for the period for you to enter
Malaysia. If you are entering Malaysia with an intention to stay
longer, such as student, you may be required to have a passport which
is valid for the duration of your visa. Q2.
How can I apply for a passport or travel document?
For passports and travel documents fill in the High Commission's form and Immigration Form IM01. Both forms are available as one pdf document. For Maldivians born in Malaysia submit the separate Travel Letter application available. Q3.
I’m having trouble filling the forms/getting the passport photo.
Guidelines on completing the forms are available on the forms itself. Since May 2008, the High Commission has made arrangements to take passport photo at the High Commission for free. If you are bringing your own photo it should comply with the Immigration guidelines.
Your application may be delayed if forms are incomplete or photos do not fit the requirements. Call the High Commission if you have queries. Q4.
How long would it take?
Normally it takes 5 to 10 working days to bring your new passport.
Temporary Travel Documents for babies will be issued within an hour of
submitting the application. Q5.

The Maldives Immigration Department Applicationf Form IM01 specifies all the application fees, and fines where applicable.
You
can pay passport service charges directly to the High Commission or to
Immigration Department in Male’ through a contact person in Maldives.
Just let us know your choice on the application forms.
Q6.
My visa is expiring and the college asked me to renew my passport before I extend my visa, why?
Malaysian Immigration authorities would normally require your passport
to be valid for more than six months or for the period for which you
are applying for a visa. Make sure you get your new passport in time
before your visa expires. Malaysian Immigration rules state that the
student is responsible to make sure that the visa is renewed. Normally,
colleges would start processing your visa application/extension one
month before visa expiry date. Q7.
What happens to my overseas visa on my old passport when I get a new one?
Immigration authorities would normally honour the visa on your old passport even if your old passport is cancelled. If you request, we will issue a letter stating when and how your passport was renewed. (Maldives Immigration no longer provides passport attachment service) However, you should transfer your old visa to your new passport as soon as possible. Q8.
Do I get the new electronic passport if I apply through the High Commission?
From 26 July 2007, the Maldives Immigration Department started
issuing electronic passports. However, electronic passports are
presently not available if you apply for a passport while outside the
Maldives. New passports issued through us would look the same, but they
won’t have the electronic passport mark (
) and are non-electronic passports. (You will need to tick one of the
non-electronic passports if you are applying through the High
Commission).
